It’s ‘A’ week in Pre-K, and Hattie Belle cannot decide which ‘A’ object to share at Circle Time.
“An anteater?” suggests Sophie from the toilet down the hall.
“NO,” states H, flatly.
“An alligator toy? A doll named Amy?”
“I don’t like that name,” says H. “NO.”
Finally, Sophie and I hit on something: my mom’s old silver necklace, with a stone of amber in the center.
“Amber! See this? This is AMBER,” I say.
H. looks skeptical.
To sweeten the pot, I tell her Polish princesses used to wear amber. I am not sure if this is true, but I know there is some connection to Poland. I am sure some princess at some time in Poland’s history may have known what amber was.
H. thinks. Soph and I hold our breath.
“OKAY,” says H. “What is it called again?”
“AMBER,” say Soph and I.
“Right,” says H.
*****
The next night, at bedtime, I ask H. how Circle Time went.
“I don’t remember,” she says.
“Come on,” I coax. “You must remember. Who went first?”
She thinks. “I did.”
“And?” I prompt her. “Did people like seeing the amber?”
Hattie cocks her head to one side, a bemused expression on her face.
“OH,” she says, musing. “I thought it was a Kristen.”
“What?”
She laughs. “I thought it was a Kristen. I told everybody it was my KRISTEN.”
“You told them your ‘A’ word was Kristen.”
“Yeah,” she says. “My special Kristen.”
I can’t stop laughing. Hattie can’t stop laughing. We are rocking on the glider and breaking down in total hysterics. I love that she gets that this is funny.
Sophie yells down the hall, “What’s so funny? WHAT? WHAT IS IT???”
I yell back, “Your sister took the amber necklace to Circle Time this morning and introduced it to everyone as a ‘Kristen.’”
Sophie falls off the toilet laughing. The dogs come to see what is going on on the second floor. Total chaos. We are all peeing ourselves over the mysterious Kristen that perplexed a room full of pre-K kids learning about the letter ‘A.’
“What did your teacher say?” I finally manage to ask H.
She sits up. She does a perfect, spot-on impression of her teacher. At least I know she is paying attention in class. “Ms. C said, ‘AAAAAAOOOOH-kaaaaaaay?‘”
This knocks us dead. She slays us. Sophie and I are crying, we are laughing so hard.
H. is now hiccuping. She cannot stop. She laughs, then she hiccups.
“I LOVE LAUGHING, MOMMY! MAKE ME LAUGH AGAIN! SAY SOMETHING FUNNY RIGHT NOW!”
I wipe my eyes. “Oh, funny bear, the thing is? Laughing is about surprise. The best laughs have to come from the unexpected stuff. But don’t worry. I’m sure something will come along soon.”
When we all finally settle down, I get H. tucked into bed. She grabs my arm and squeezes it.
“Mommy, I love you so much I want to HUG YOU SO HARD YOU DIE,” says my ardent H-Belle.
“Wow, that would sort of defeat the purpose, but I know exactly what you mean,” I say, squeezing back. “I know exactly what you mean.”

That’s AWESOME! (Also an “A” word)
Oh, my heart is Absolutely bursting.
I have so MANY favorites at this particular URL, but this may be my FAVORITE favorite story.
Fantastic!
My mom and I used to laugh hysterically when I was a girl.
It was wonderful!
i’m sorry, THAT’S THE funniest thing. definitely the hardest i’ve laughed today, by far.
oh, mysterious kristen. thank you for being an “A” object during Circle Time. and, THANK YOU H for making this quiet girl tonight laugh loud enough to bother the neighbors.
And that is why I love being a kindergarten teacher!
Beautiful. It must have made your heart swell twice as much as it did mine.
That is one of those stories that you and the girls will remember for ever. And amber is now officially Kristen in your house, forevermore. Something you girls will always share, and that will make you smile every time you see amber – I mean, Kisten. It reminds me of my friend Kristen, who called KFC “F*cky Fried Chicken” when she was little. Now, our whole family calls it that – including my 3 year old.
You know, it’s even funnier in writing. I laughed when you told me the other day but reading it just makes it even more delightful! What a little comedienne we have on our hands.
Suggestion: when Circle Time is doing the “K”, let Hattie take her Polish Kristen back and re-introduce it as “A”. Reverse engineering.
LOL My security code begins with an “A”: A FUL This story is definitely full of “A”s!
Those girls?
Treasures.
This is so, so good. I think I will always see amber differently now. —-Kristen
I love this!!!! Picturing you all there, laughing and hugging, what a wonderful, wonderful afternoon! It makes my heart happy just thinking about it.
By far, my favorite post of yours EVER. Perfection.
I don’t even know you and I want to hug you so hard you die. Well, not die, but maybe just enough to make your eyes bug out.
xo
I’d have fallen off the toilet, too, if I was *ahem* reading blogs on the toilet this afternoon.
Reminds me of the time my daughter was telling me all about the girl she’d met from down the street. She kept saying the girl’s name was “Denephew.” It took me a few minutes to get that it was “Denise.”
I think that stuff’s one of the best parts of parenting.
Oh my….we have these crazy letter discussions CONSTANTLY with my 3 year old. He is determined to have “T” week every week so he can take a ninja turtle. He sighs dejectedly each time we tell him “no, it’s still E week, buddy!” (btw, he chose an Angel for A week!)
I love stories like this – it gave me a much needed laugh. My 7 yo daughter had me in stitches this afternoon when she said her millkshake tasted like a latte. When I told her there was no way she knew what a latte tasted like she said “Oh, you’re right, it’s a Tappuccino”.
That’s the best story I’ve heard all day. And it’s been a loooong day.
Oh mah holy hell – kand that was the best story I’ve read kall day. Have ka great weekemd Jen kand girls.
I’ve awarded you the Brilliante Weblog award! You deserve it! http://marymurtz.wordpress.com/2008/09/26/and-the-awards-go-to/
Spread the joy. xoxo Mary
Oh man, the “hug you so hard you die”, how great is that?
This made me laugh so hard because my mom still tells everyone how dorky little me instisted on wearing her frogneck shirt on T day to kindergarten. You know, my FROG neck shirt, on T day. With my tennis shoes, okay?
Maybe Kristen has met my niece’s favorite color: Aqua-Loraine
What a gem that was !!! (budamp bump, thank you ladies and gentlement)
I very much enjoy your blog and admire and envy your relationship with your girls, I hope that when I have children, we can enjoy the same camaraderie. I most admire your ability to be fun and laid-back and yet also set appropriate limits with your girls..not being the “cool” mom, but the good mom. = )
man, I love your house.
