Consider, if you will, the life cycle of an 8-year-old

Sophie: I’ve read every one of my chapter books.

Me: Oh, I don’t know about that.

Sophie: (eye roll, disgusted sigh) CONSIDER MY LIFE CYCLE. Read, read, read, sleep. Read, read, read, eat, read, read, sleep. Read, school, read, eat, sleep, read, read, read.

Me: Your LIFE CYCLE. Can I write that down?

Sophie: (eye roll of champions)

They master the Eye Roll by the age of eight? Oy Vay! I don’t have much time!

what I meant to say was:

Classic. I (heart) Sophie.

Chapter books, eh?

Please high-five Sophie for me.

As a teacher, I applaud the read, read, read inclusion in the life cycle. You think she can roll her eyes now, just wait until about 14 years old.

Ah, would love to cycle through life with so much reading again…

She is amazing. I’m kind of glad though that we’re still at the dadda stage over here ;)

Also, I’m with nicolien.

Dare we mention that she and cousin Ben read through Harry Potter months ago?

Bibliophiles rule. Eyes roll.

that’s similar to my cycle…

despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, sleep, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, despair, sleep

I, for one, am completely jealous of her life cycle. If she has any info on where I can sign up, send it my way.

Yeah, mom, sheesh, where have you been?! hahaha

love it, love it. Pretty sure she and my 8 year old went to eye rolling school together. Also, that was my EXACT Life Cycle when I was 8. Boy do I miss it!

I had that same life cycle at 8. I’d kill for that now. I’m getting the house ready to sell so my life cycle, for the last 3 MONTHS, has been work, paint, sleep, work, paint, sleep, work, paint, sleep, paint, paint, paint, work, paint, sleep, oh god I’m so tired, sleep, sleep, sleep, work, paint, sleep…..

LOL! She sounds so funny, adorable, and oh so smart!

14 Jenny May 16, 2009 at 3:26 pm

She just described my childhood!

15 Kelly S. May 16, 2009 at 5:01 pm

My girl is seven & is living the same life cycle. Except that when she gets bored, she re-reads her chapter books out loud and inserts her & her friends names instead.

Oh, and HEAR YA on the eye-rolling. Lord.

ha! my husband had a very similar conversation with our ten-year-old this morning. basically she wants to know why children have to do the same old thing day in and day out. oh, the daily grind of childhood! just wait until they have to get jobs… :)

oh i’m dreading the eyeroll stage …. i know it is coming!

18 ozma May 17, 2009 at 3:59 am

I remember eight!

I thought (a) I knew everything there was to know or (b) I would soon knew everything worth knowing.

I don’t think the fact the opposite was true really hit me until I was about 28.

It’s fun, eight! The endless possibilities.

Is her hand on her hip too? B/c that’s what I’m getting.

20 anonymom May 17, 2009 at 11:33 am

She’s a corker, that one!

21 patois May 18, 2009 at 8:34 am

So long as you note the eyerolling, I think you’ll accurately capture her essence.

I love when the kids bust out these things! Last night, I was reading Strega Nona Magic Lessons to my 4 year old in which Big Anthony dresses up at “Antonia” to trick Strega Nona into teaching him magic. It’s so OBVIOUS that it’s Big Anthony, especially because he is revealed in the end. We have read this book a kabillion times and, last night, my daughter said, “It’s interesting that Antonia is wearing Big Anthony’s shoes”. I said, “Honey! Big Anthony IS Antonia”. She turned to me with the most serious face and said, “I did not realize that.” Of course, I’m a sucker for a kid who opts out of a contraction.

Wow…this comment seems less topical than it did in my head but I’ve spent so much time on it that I am going to post it anyway. I’ll probably have commenter’s remorse later but what the hell.

That is AWESOME. (my security code is ZANY!)

24 Karen May 18, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Warning: the eye rolls never stop coming… and the heavy sigh. But as they get older, they do come to acknowledge that – hey- maybe you DID know something about something… sometimes. Cherish these days, I miss them already. Mine is 19.

25 Woman with Kids May 18, 2009 at 6:36 pm

I want her life cycle… complete with eye rolls!

26 Christy May 19, 2009 at 10:06 am

Yeah, I want that life cycle too! Reading is way more fun than housework, housework, housework, housework, housework, housework, sleep, housework, housework, housework, housework…I feel more like a hamster on a wheel! Lol

This is completely off topic, but I was wondering if in real life, you know Catherin Newmann of Ben and Birdy fame. She was just writing about a school auction at her kid’s school and you wrote about attending a school auction not too long ago. Let’s just say if this school is lucky enough to have 2 such amazingly talented women as mommy volunteers, then it is lucky indeed. I would attend a school fundraiser just to get to meet the two of you. (If I didn’t live all the way in Louisiana, that is…)

That cracked me up. Life cycle =)
