Continuing my brief series of shout-outs to the awesome women who rock my world, personally and professionally, may I present for your consideration:

Directed by my excellent Grinnell pal Jackie Weissman (far right, green shirt; I will take a brief moment here to claim credit for introducing her to her equally groovy husband, Andrew, another Grinnellian), Rock N Roll Mamas is “a feature-length documentary currently being filmed in Portland, Oregon, with an anticipated completion date of September 2007. It’s an exploration of what it means to be a mother struggling to maintain your own creative identity.”
Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses, Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney and Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols (among others) graciously allowed Jackie to film their lives as rock mamas, on the road and off, with their kids along for the ride. This is soulful, unexpected, untalked-about parenting…the kind I figure most of us are doing, maybe minus the guitars.
At her terrific site, Jackie states, “My goal here is to explore and reveal the many facets of these women — who they are as people, artists, and mothers. My hope is that the film will bring mothers together in the solidarity that we are all indeed rock star moms just by trying to remain true to ourselves while parenting our children!”
Jackie still needs plenty of funding to complete this film. So tap into your secret rock star core and be part of the band, man. If you go to the Rock Mama Films site, you can buy a copy of the CD featuring some of the hippest Rock Mamas out there. Even if you never listen to it, your friends will still see it on your shelf and be deeply impressed by your cool, au courant music sensibilities.
You can also buy a wicked cool T-shirt that will look great stretched across any pre-, post-, or non-partum rack.
Rock on, Jackie, baby!

So much coolness happening right here where I live and I CANT GO TO IT ALL…..it makes my stomach tighten up, I want to do it ALL……
Thanks for sharing!
Wow, “Steel Magnolias” meets “This is Spinal Tap”.
Through a unique and innovative process, the movie was shot on a revolutionary new organic film made entirely out of estrogen.
Ok, brace for the sweeping generalization…Oregon is the birthplace of kick ass brilliance and doin’ it our way and proud of it’ness. Born in Eugene, Oregon and a now closeted bleeding heart liberal, quasi feiminist, child of hippies living in Upstate New York I love reading about this stuff. My kid sister was a huge Sleater-Kinney and Sonic Youth fan. Thanks for using your creative platform to highlight remarkable women.
i *heart* grinnell women!
Bossy can’t wait. She takes great comfort from knowing that super cool types are knee-deep in it too.

Thanks Jenn for the shout out…You rock! Everyone please check out a new sneak preview video interview from Rock N Roll Mamas every Tuesday on http://www.babble.com! The first one is with Kristin Hersh. There’s one with Zia McCabe, Corin Tucker, and esteemed rock critic and mom, Ann Powers.

Jackie Weissman (Grinnell college friend of the fabulous Jenn Mattern)
