Proud today

A few weeks back, Sophie asked her papa if he would help her organize a bake sale to raise money for homeless animals.

Being a happy baker, David was happy to help. Sophie made a huge sign with a smiling dog on it, explaining she was raising money for animals in need of homes. Then she and David made banana bread and set up a buffet table on the sidewalk. Sweet neighbors stopped by to buy up all of the banana bread from sister-sellers S and H.

Today, my mama is taking both girls to the sad animal shelter in the Berkshires, the run-down one that never gets any press, to deliver the money raised. They’ll be seeing where the money is going, and be able to meet some of the animals they’ll be helping.

Meanwhile, I’m staying home and vacuuming up dog fur, and cleaning out the back porch to find toys for charity, and doing my mom’s laundry. That’s my gig. When the girls come back, they’re going to decide which toys are in good-enough condition to give away, and then we’ll take them to Goodwill.

Good team effort today. Thanks to everybody local who bought banana bread!

What a terrific thing for your girls to do. I am a dog lover and I like hearing about others, especially kids, who are dog lovers too. I am annoyed by freaky kids who don’t know the first thing about how to approach or handle a dog – of course I understand it is not their fault, they are usually the product of freaky parents who also don’t know the first thing about dogs. How does the saying go? The more people I meet, the more I like my dogs…(?)

I do love your blog though and read it regularly. Thanks for sharing your honesty and humor.

We can always use more dog rescuers!

Please thank them for me on behalf of all the shelter dogs out there waiting for a second chance.

Your girls are awesome. You should be very very proud. :)
All of our pets have been rescue pets and it’s hard not to want to bring them all home when you visit those places.
ps- the local Goodwill won’t take toys anymore, but the Salvation Army will.

You guys are doing a lot of things right as parents if this is how your girls chose to spend their free time. They did a really good thing!

Sophie handed her pink envelope to the shelter ladies and they were thrilled. They then took us on a tour of the shelter and proudly showed off the newest room for the kitty cats where Sophie and Hannah spent some serious playtime with various cats and their toys. It was good to see this small addition (which even had an air conditioner) and also the fresh flowers blooming in a display outside the front door. It seems the staff is doing a lot to upgrade the shelter and keep it pleasant for both animals and people. I was impressed. We heard some sad stories about drop-offs and foundlings. I told the girls they can volunteer in a shelter when they’re high-school students. Sophie may become a vet one day …
