Sophie has Had It with her little sister. She has Had It with me, sure, because I brought her little sister into the world, but she has Really Had It with Hattie Belle.

So she is ignoring both of us, zealously.

I say: Your sister is talking to you.

Sophie says: [nothing]

I say: She’s your little sister.

Sophie says: [nothing]

Hattie Belle says: YEAH YOU HAVE TO TALK TO ME

Sophie says: I don’t like her.

Hattie says: YES YOU DO YOU HAVE TO

I say: She’s your SISTER. You must like something about her.

Sophie says: [nothing]

I say: She makes you laugh at the dinner table. That’s something.

Sophie says: [nothing]

I say: Think of her as Ramona. From Beezus and Ramona.

Sophie says: Fine. Then I’m acting JUST LIKE BEEZUS.

I say: Beezus and Ramona learned to get along better when their daddy lost his job. Think of it like that. We all have to work together.

Sophie: We’re not up to that part of the story yet.
