Just because she charms me

May 7, 2007 · 32 comments

Hattie Belle, during a recent car trip:

Is there water in heaven? Will you bring my bathing suit?

Where are the Indians now? Can I talk to them?

What does danger mean?

I think God is like a fairy godmother because it is GODmother! [laughs]

The picture charms me too. At that second I was trying to talk H-Belle into sitting up straight, and she simply would not let go of my head. To think: She was driving me nuts at the time, because I wanted the picture to be “right.” So much to learn. Thank you, Jen Mardus, for catching that perfectly right moment some time ago.

“What does danger mean?”

She shoots straight for the heart, doesn’t she? Charm is such a poignant virtue.

About that lesson we all have to learn: It applies so broadly, there is no coincidence that it is the central theme in so many religions and self-help programs. If we all could detach ourselves from these notions of perfection and appreciate in the moment just how very “right” the world can be within accidents, without trying, the smiles would roll in like waves.

May you continue to reach your readers this way, to model this style of sacred perfection. You inspire the hell out of me, for what it’s worth, and I know I’m not alone here.

Wow. This picture is so breathtaking, and the story behind it is like a big, fat mirror in my face.

I need to let go more.

Fantastic photo.

gorgeous photo. she is wise, too. Did you tell her that we will get to skinny dip in heaven?

That is a perfect shot. I expected you to be naked and duct taped to the bow of a boat … but y’know, whatever.

She is delightfully gorgeous – as are you.

You are blessed to know photographers who know a moment, when they see it!
You are both so very gorgeous!
And I can only double Kate on that perfection thing. Although I’m no better example myself. But I keep trying.
Waving at you both beautiful girls from Bulgaria.

“Beauty is truth, truth beauty,”—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. ”

And that photo my friend is true beauty.

Bossy can relate – when she tries to manipulate it doesn’t allow for moments filled with grace.

Magical photo!

What does danger mean? If only it meant the things we were afraid of as kids.

What a beautiful photo; so glad to see a new post.

Keep sprinklin’ the fairy dust; the rest will take care of itself.

i can’t wait to have kids!…except that i can wait

Hmmmmm… argyle socks with a polka-dot dress and a striped hat. I’ll bet the color version of that photo conveys an entirely different ‘message’. Let me guess, shortly after you showed up for the shoot, your photographer said something like:
“Ahhhh… well… you know what would be neat? We should take all the photos in black and white. Yes. Yes. Definitely black and white.”

13 mandy May 8, 2007 at 9:19 am

That was beautiful. Simply beautiful.

14 Melissa May 8, 2007 at 9:54 am

What a beautiful photograph!! I always like hearing the stories behind your photos too.

Stunning photo…

and whatever the reason for black and white (Spot – you’re so bad), it works!!

Actually, I’ve seen “the color version” of Hattie’s outfit and it is quite charming. Woof.

I wish to second the comment made by #2 emery jo.

Beautiful picture! Sometimes the “perfect” pictures don’t tell the story that the “moment” pictures do. I have a really great picture of my husband and I when we were in Disney World 7 years ago. We had just been fighting (at the “happiest place on earth” – go figure!), one of the Disney photogs took our picture and it came out so great. We look happy and loving – still one of our favorite pictures to this day.

That photo is pure poetry . . .

It’s such a charming picture – the candid ones are always best.

These are the memories we need when they drive us to foreign lands to bunk with Bjork.

oh, what a great photo. A GREAT photo. And a wonderful lesson, as well. Thanks for the reminder that perfection is in the moment, not the pose.

22 Laura May 8, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I wish I had a photo like that….I seem to be the one always taking the pictures. Sigh.

Maybe paparazzi would be good, sometimes?

23 lainieb May 8, 2007 at 7:45 pm

That picture – love it, love it, love it! I love it when they crawl on your head.

24 Tal May 8, 2007 at 7:50 pm

I like the story behind the photo as much as I love the photo itself. Beautiful.

25 Sandra May 8, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Great photo and great reminder to enjoy the moment and not get caught up in making it perfect. I too am guilty of that. My favorite wedding photo of dh and myself is one taken right after the ceremony where we are both laughing and looking happy walking back to the reception. My dh hates the very same photo because he remembers that I was all tense and cranky because we were running late and he thinks my smile looks fake. You know what? He’s probably right, but I like to “remember” it my way.

These are my favorite kinds of photos……truly they are REAL and so very beautiful. This one is exquisite.

I know a million other said this too, but I really like that photo too.

Godmother – LOL!

28 mizmell May 9, 2007 at 6:03 am

What a smart one! She has already figured out God is a woman.

29 Alesia May 9, 2007 at 10:07 am

What a beautiful picture. I think I went through a whole year of wearing my son as a hat. At the time, it drove me crazy (“Could I have an inch of personal space, please?”). Now that he’s almost 7, of course, I yearn for it.

Thank you for giving me cause to cease lurking! [newbie]
Best wishes
